VFX stands for Visual Effects. It’s the Juice, it’s the life that isn’t really alive, any magic, explosions, waterfalls, swordslashes, exploding fruit is all Visual effects. Remember this if it moves but isn’t a character you can 90% certain it falls in the realm of VFX. They’re dynamic, player driven, spaced towards the camera, simulated in real-time or even generated with the power of AI and procedural workflows.

Real-time VFX artists create visual effects using a multitude of software and tools to create effects such as explosions, particle effects and anything that moves that isn’t a character. They’re one of few disciplines that require collaborations with all aspects of Design, Programming and Art. We squeeze as much out of the engine to achieve the highest quality within performance and aesthetic requirements and aim to create effects that enhance the gameplay experience.

What software is used to create VFX for games?

The essential software is the game engine, most engines come with built-in tools such as particle and shader editors. This is the bread and butter of Real-time VFX, but not the only tasty part of the pipeline. We Leverage CGI software such as Houdini to create realistic and large-scale simulations, dynamics and effects, blender to generate Meshes render shaders on top and texturing software such as Substance and Photoshop to make intricate textures.

Does VFX require coding?

VFX doesn't require coding at all, without entering the matrix you can still make excellent. VFX as that’s how most games in Unreal 4 and Unity render particle systems. At MelonadeFX we value simplicity, as in most cases they give the best results. These days they’ve opened Pandora’s box and introduced visual scripting languages to every element of VFX, Texturing, Mesh Generation, Simulation, Particle systems and shaders alike. Within engines, many of these may even communicate with one another to create the most immersive and dynamic immersion.
